Matty

July 1st, 2009

The following shots are from a b&w shoot with my good friend Matty… He is an actor so it was nice to get a variety of expressions and poses.  We had a good time down on ol’ south broadway…

I’ve been wanting to get more low tech these days, check out some earlier posts for more info… I have been shooting b&w film lately, however this shoot was done digitally… Still have a hard time with the instant gratification thing… I did modify the way I shoot for this though, jpg instead of raw and in the monochrome setting on the camera, and I only looked at the lcd screen to make sure exposure was correct in each new location… Kept it simple with natural light, took away the technical distractions, and let matty do his thing… Check it out -

Ascaris in Westword

June 27th, 2009

I had the opportunity to shoot the metal band Ascaris recently… Considering the drummer is one of my best friends the job was easy to get…

Congrats to them for getting a full page write up in the Westword, an alternative weekly here in Denver just like the Village Voice in nyc… So they obviously needed a photo to go with the story, and they used one that I took for them on our last shoot together…

Look for more pics to come as I’m going to their cd release show tonight at the Larimer Lounge… Check it out!

Walks

June 17th, 2009

I’ve started a little creative exercise for myself… Basically I just walk around with a camera and shoot whatever catches my eye… I don’t look at the back of the camera, in fact lately I’ve been shooting film… A kind of getting back to what excited me about photography before I went to school… Just the act of walking around and recording what is interesting to me and hopefully being pleasantly surprised when I see the results…

The whole digital/computer world has been annoying me recently… I’m not sure why.  The countless hours sitting in front of the computer, the constant checking the lcd on the camera to make sure everything is ok, the inconsistent digital prints, and the incessant bombardment of new products… The latter is great sure, but by the time I procure new equipment, it’s already outdated…

Whaaa!  Poor me… Enough with the whining.  Basically, I’m kinda in a rut these days and I’m working to dig out… I’ll make it eventually.  I love photography.

So, with that said, check out a couple images from one of my recent ‘walks’ -

Inspiration

June 14th, 2009

Sometimes inspiration just presents itself and you can’t help but be affected… I’ve seen and read two things this weekend that both made sense to me in different but complimenting ways.  So a journey must be embarked upon, not physically but spiritually intellectually.

I feel that although I’ve been shooting a decent amount lately, none of it has made me really excited… There have been a couple of great shots, but on a whole I’ve been stagnant and maybe borrowing (styles) more than I should.

That’s not to say that I haven’t been enjoying photography, my headshots are getting better and every job has been shot with the utmost care and joy… It’s just the photography for myself and ‘portfolio’ shoots are a little uninspired… Thus the title of this post.

The cliche creative block.

So I’m going to shoot b&w film and hand process and print! Ha!

Take that block! Going back to the roots where you can touch and hold and smell your results… It’s tangible… For no matter how much I really do love technology, I’m getting sick of the damn computer!  This might be cliche as well, but I’ve got to try something.

So in the near future look for some nice grainy, contrasty b&w images… I’ll scan the prints and post on the blog and facebook.

Self Portraits

May 29th, 2009

Amanda and I moved into a new apt recently and we have some colorful walls and a lot more space… I’ve been wanting to shoot inside since we moved in… So the other day I decided it was new self portrait day and spent a little time with the self timer… These 2 shots are virtually the same, just with a different shirt obviously… After shooting with the tshirt, I thought it needed something a little nicer… Check it out-

May 21st, 2009

So I decided to change the galleries on the website a little… I’ve been thinking about the direction of my photography and I realized that I’m really passionate about portraits… So out with the fashion section and I divided the work section into: location, studio, and headshots.  So there ya have it, a plethora of portraits… I added some new shots as well… Thanks everyone for your support, and letting me stick a camera in your faces!!!!

Press Photos on Location!!!

May 11th, 2009

I finally got a chance to do some press photos for Town Hall in Littleton on location!  We normally do them on some sort of background in the theater, mostly white or black seamless paper, which can be cool but I’m just bored of… Anyway, for their production of ‘Oklahoma’, Town Hall set up the shoot at the Littleton History Museum.  Which is basically preserved 1860’s and 1890’s farm buildings… The perfect place to shoot some photos about old west farm life in oklahoma!  Check out some of the shots, thanks to the cast!  It was a fun shoot!
